The days of globalized food are over. For our nation’s security, farmers need a fair wage and should be paid to grow food, not subsidized commodity crops. We feed animals with grain and we feed soft drink companies with high fructose corn syrup, but we depend on the Global South to round out our diets.
Farm programs must be shifted from subsidizing commodity production to encouraging our farmers to farm sustainably and market locally. Developing living wage policies for farmers is the best way of providing consumers with more healthy choices and allowing farmers globally to earn fair prices and feed their own nations—not our junk food habit.
