Farmer and Journalist
Crofton, Nebraska
Curt Arens and his family own and operate Bow View Farm in Crofton, Nebraska. Their fourth generation, 600-acre, diversified farm produces pork, beef, corn, soybeans, oats, alfalfa, prairie hay and turnips for grazing, and Christmas and landscape trees. In 2000, Curt began raising black oilseed sunflowers and since has launched his own birdseed company. His family direct markets drug-free pork and has a hormone-free backgrounding program for their feeder calves. In addition to farming, Curt is a staff farm writer for three local newspapers. He also freelances for several regional and national farm publications, writing about sustainable agriculture topics. Curt and his family publish their own sustainable farming newsletter, Northern Plains Family Farmer. Curt serves as a director on the board of a local visitors center. He also planned a National Agriculture Week program at the Corps of Discovery Welcome Center that brought together local health-conscious consumers looking for farm fresh products and farmers who are direct marketing grass-finished meat, eggs and milk.
